Joe Biden: The Life, the Run, and What Matters Now
by Evan Osnos
Published a week before the 2020 election, Osnos's portrait follows a politician's long pursuit of the presidency. It grew out of two New Yorker profiles and long interviews with Biden and more than a hundred others, and you see how family tragedy and professional setbacks shaped his empathy and resilience.
Core ideas
- The long road: The run came after the Senate years, the vice presidency under Obama and his decision to stay out of 2016.
- Loss as formation: In this telling, the empathy he brought to the 2020 run, with Kamala Harris as running mate, traces back to family tragedy and setbacks.
- Many witnesses: Obama, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, family and advisers fill in the picture, from close to a decade of reporting.
