The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom

Domestication is don Miguel Ruiz's word for the beliefs you absorbed from family and society without choosing them, agreements that cause needless suffering. Writing with Janet Mills, he presents four new agreements, drawn in his account from Toltec teaching, as the way to replace them and find personal freedom.

Core ideas
  • Your word and your reactions: Be impeccable with your word, and don't take anything personally, because what other people do is about them rather than you.
  • Don't make assumptions: The third agreement is to stop making them, one of four meant to replace the limiting beliefs you inherited.
  • Always do your best: Your best varies with circumstances, so the fourth agreement asks for the effort you can give on a given day, not a fixed standard.
